I just watched this HBO movie called "The Girl in the Cafe." It is an awesome movie and I suddenly got this sudden adrenaline rush to write again... to write about things.. things that I have noticed for a while or things that just came to me... hidden out of my ignorance.
I noticed the ad for this movie few weeks ago and I was interested to watch it because Bill Neighy is in it. I think anyone who watched the "Love Actually" would remember him :)
I expected him to comical in this movie but instead he played this character who is burdened by his responsibilities, held back because of his position as a representative in the British G8 committee, lonely as he feels he couldn't share any of his aspirations with anyone... yup a lonely pathetic old man who dreams to be summoned as a hero saving the Rolling Stones :P
So the story started when he met this woman in a cafe (duh...) and an instant connection was there. She likes to "scrubbed up" and seems very shy at first. There were definitely moment of awkwardness between the couple.. sometimes they made you wonder if this couple would eventually get together.
The relationship is only one part of the movie. The message that the movie tries to deliver goes deeper than that. People should be aware of what is happening in Africa nowadays and how the decisions of the leaders from the powerful G8 committee can greatly affect the situation. Then I started thinking of how ironic our world is.
For example, the Live 8 concert, which was dubbed as the greatest concert that had ever been held drawing more than 2 billion TV watchers, had its flaws. The purpose of the concert is to increase support for debt relief and AIDS in Africa. Hundreds of artists and musicians took part in the concert as a way to show that they as celebrities are also aware and want you to join them. Sounds great isn't it. But maybe because you did not know the fact that each artist received a hamper filled with luxurious things worth thousands and thousands of dollars. I bet the total value of all the hampers can prolong the lives of the children in Africa for at least a couple of weeks.
I know it's unreasonable to say that if you are doing a charity then it totally should be voluntary and selfless-without any price tagged on whatever you are going to do. But again knowing the fact that the hamper existed and the artists received them was a disappointment.
But i love this message... the message that the movie tries to convey...
"Love can't change what's wrong in the world, but it's a start"
Love the song too Cold Water by Damien Rice :)

hey cit, it's nice to see that you've updated your blog. Keep on writing yaa... I want to add some comments about live8 too. Do you know that the concerts are all free? Apparently the purpose of Live8 is not for raising money but to raise awareness. How dumb is that???? Even if they charge $1 for each person who came to the concerts, they can still raise a lotttt of money for Africa.
